The HP Mini 1000, Hewlett-Packard's New Netbook Was Carefully Tested

The HP Mini 1000, Hewlett-Packard's new netbook was carefully tested by PC World, CNet, ComputerShopper and Laptop Magazine. Among integrated parts you will find up to 16GB of solid state drive storage or a 60GB hard drive, Intel's Atom processor, a built-in web camera, a 10.2-inch 1024x600 display, 3-cell battery, 512MB or 1GB of DDR2 memory, and Windows XP operating system, an 8.9" screen.

During testing they determined the advantages:

- better touchpad implementation than in the 2133;

- more indiscrete and thinner design than in rival 10-inch netbooks;

- a fantastic keyboard, that is also large enough (92% of a full-sized keyboard);

- a degraded weight, thanks to the switch from aluminum to plastic;

- good battery life with a 3-cell unit (2 hours and 56 minutes in Laptop Magazine's test, 2 hours and 44 minutes in CNet's video playback benchmark. In both cases it's better than the Lenovo S10 with a 3-cell battery);

- use of the Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU, faster than HP Mini 2133's VIA C-7M;

- efficient and attractive layout, more stylish than in many netbooks;

- impressive audio;

- Windows XP preinstalled, which works better with netbooks than Windows Vista, used in the HP 2133 (Linux-based 1000 model to be available in January);

- reasonably hard plastic;

- decent web camera;

- the fastest wireless transfer rates yet seen from a netbook;

- a great display for viewing images and movies.

There are also disadvantages:

- unpromising small and uprightly very narrow touchpad;

- a needless proprietary external drive connection;

- awkward touch-pad-button placement;

- the price higher than similar netbooks from other manufacturers are sold at;

- limited expansion options (two USB ports, shared headphone/mic audio connection, external monitor output only via an optional adapter);

- current unavailability of the 6-cell battery option;

- a glossy display coating that makes the display hardly viewable outdoors.

The 8.9-inch display HP Mini 1000 is available at $399 .
